Lab Specimen Processor
About the role
HCA Florida North Florida Hospital seeks a Lab Specimen Processor to perform various non-technical functions under supervision. This role involves specimen collection, processing, submission, and monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates proficiency in specimen collection and testing requirements.
- Demonstrates proficiency in venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
- Utilizes supplies appropriately and follows established procedures for patient identification and specimen collection.
- Completes appropriate documentation and educates patients/families about specimen collection procedures.
- Communicates with computer systems for job functions.
- Performs clerical duties such as faxing, phone calls, pneumatic tube system operations, and report preparation.
- Deals with priorities and completes duties efficiently.
- Reviews Outstanding Specimen Reports (OSRs) and pending specimen collections/accessioning issues.
- Receives laboratory specimens, registers and orders specimens accurately and promptly, labels specimens, and aliquots according to protocols.
- Centrifuges and aliquots specimens, prepares them for courier pick-up, and includes special instructions as needed.
- Discards laboratory specimens according to schedule and performs preventive maintenance and quality assurance tasks.
- Collects chain-of-custody drug collections as required.
- Keeps records and documentation related to specimen problems and takes corrective actions.
- Cleans the area upon emergency spills of specimens.
- Assesses specimen requirements for referral testing and troubleshoots any issues.
- Processes, sorts, and prepares specimens for submission to referral laboratories.
- Maintains regular monitoring and review of referred testing status to ensure timely results.
- Communicates and troubleshoots problem specimens in a timely manner.
Qualifications
- Ability to interact in a team environment and provide excellent customer service.
- Two or more years of experience in registration, clerical duties, and specimen processing.
- Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Paramedic, or EMT certification preferred.
