About the role
This position processes patient laboratory specimens efficiently and accurately, including specimen receipt, accessioning, and distribution. The role involves handling STAT and urgent samples, inspecting specimens for correct labeling and integrity, and preparing specimens for analysis. Additional responsibilities include managing reference laboratory send-outs, supporting staff training, performing clerical duties, and assisting in outpatient/non-patient areas.
Responsibilities
- Process patient laboratory specimens, including accessioning in the laboratory information system or manual alternatives.
- Identify and expedite STAT and urgent samples.
- Inspect specimens for correct labeling, patient identification, and integrity.
- Prepare specimens for analysis and distribute to appropriate testing locations, including cross-campus tracking and shipping.
- Manage reference laboratory send-out and resulting procedures in the laboratory information system.
- Understand collection requirements for special and referral testing, ensuring sample integrity and adequacy.
- Prepare manifests, track, and dispatch samples; monitor turnaround time (TAT) and results for reference lab tests.
- Distribute reports with appropriate clinical alerts and notifications.
- Assist in training support staff and students.
- Perform clerical duties, including inputting test orders, generating labels, retrieving patient information, triaging phone lines, and reporting results.
- Organize and maintain quality control records accurately.
- Manage patient reception in outpatient/non-patient areas, including sign-in, translating MD orders into the LIS, report distribution, and collecting insurance/identification information.
- Monitor supply inventory, place orders, receive and distribute inventory, and advise supervisors of supply/equipment needs.
- Adhere to infection control techniques and maintain a sanitary work environment.
- Demonstrate safe work practices and maintain equipment in working order.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of phlebotomy experience in a clinical/hospital setting preferred.
- Knowledge of specimen acceptability, processing steps, and computer accessioning.
- Familiarity with computers, preferably SOFT laboratory information systems.
- Professional, customer service-oriented individual with excellent communication skills.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
- Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) preferred.

Pay
The pay range for this full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) position is $18.94 - $23.68 per hour. Actual compensation may differ based on assigned hours and position status (e.g., part-time). The range reflects base compensation and does not include potential bonuses, incentive compensation, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.

Scheduled weekly hours: 40
