Lab Scientist E, Genomic Sequencing Unit

About the role

The primary responsibility of this position is performing molecular testing on samples from the state of Michigan using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). At the entry level, this scientist role utilizes NGS for bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic pathogens of interest. The scientist employs amplicon, metagenomic, short-read, and long-read whole genome sequencing approaches to generate sequencing data, which is used for epidemiological outbreak tracing to keep Michigan residents safe.

Responsibilities

• Perform molecular testing using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) on diverse pathogen samples.
• Utilize amplicon, metagenomic, short-read, and long-read whole genome sequencing techniques.
• Generate and analyze sequencing data for epidemiological outbreak tracing.

Requirements

• Possession of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, forensic science, or a related pure or applied science.
• Professional experience as follows:
  • Laboratory Scientist 9: No specific experience required.
  • Laboratory Scientist 10: One year of professional experience carrying out tests, analyses, or research involving chemical, biochemical, and biological samples.
  • Laboratory Scientist P11: Two years of professional experience, including one year equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist 10.
• Subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and/or alcohol testing.
• Successful completion of a background investigation and criminal records check as a condition of employment.

Additional Information

This is an in-person position located at 3350 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lansing, MI. Employees will be provided with computers and, if necessary, phones for state work. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule during the interview process.
