Genomics Lab Scientist Assoc

An integral part of the Children's Hospital Colorado Precision Diagnostics Laboratory team, advancing our understanding of genomics and providing accurate testing of genomic specimens for effective diagnoses and treatment of patients.

About the role

Works with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals—including laboratory scientists, data analysts, genetic counselors, variant analysts, software engineers, scientific directors, and physicians—to provide expertise in testing and interpretation of genomics laboratory test results. Primary responsibility for performing wet bench testing and data analysis.

Schedule

Friday – Monday, Evening Shift: 10:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Responsibilities

• Performs complex molecular diagnostic techniques on clinical specimens and demonstrates competency with pipetting and various PCR techniques including but not limited to NGS library preparation, hybrid capture, and sequencing.
• Understands and uses proper safety practices.
• Participates in procedure review and writing when requested.
• Assists in maintaining accreditation standards, including all check sheets, quality control information sheets, and ordering laboratory supplies to maintain proper inventory.
• Completes quality assurance activities such as maintenance, statistics, calibration verification, and quality control review.
• Performs nucleic acid extraction (DNA and/or RNA) on various specimen types.
• Responsible for computer data entry, recall, accessioning, receiving, and labeling laboratory specimens, and navigation within LIMS and other laboratory interface systems as needed.
• Reports accurate results, evaluating and interpreting results in accordance with acceptance criteria for clinical significance and validity, and recognizing atypical/abnormal results requiring additional follow-up.
• Performs all laboratory functions according to standard operating procedures and established guidelines/regulatory agencies, including participation in proficiency testing and familiarization with regulations and quality indicators.
• Performs routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and minor adjustments, with appropriate documentation on all laboratory equipment.
• Consciously works to minimize errors and takes responsibility for correcting and documenting errors and assigned duties in a timely manner.
• Ensures quality control is acceptable and instrumentation is functioning and maintained within defined tolerance limits, with completed documentation.
• Troubleshoots equipment and assay performance when results are not within tolerance limits.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Genomics, Molecular Biology, or related field.

Pay

Hourly range: $31.25 to $46.87, dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
