Lab Metallurgist

About the role

The Metallurgist at Aluminum Dynamics The Lab is responsible for overseeing the safe, quality, and reliable operation of the metallurgical lab. Equipment includes tensile testing, hardness testing, sample prep, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.

Responsibilities

• Oversee procedures and scheduling of equipment and testing
• Supervise lab technicians
• Communicate with department metallurgists and process operations
• Select and coordinate appropriate analysis techniques for materials
• Interpret resulting data and collaborate with metallurgists to determine next steps
• Generate failure analysis reports for production and customers
• Maintain calibration, verification, and operation of lab equipment
• Perform metallographic sample preparation, inspection, and characterization
• Collect and analyze test results, maintain accurate records, and report deviations or non-conformities
• Support ISO/IEC 17025 and additional customer testing compliance requirements
• Coordinate testing workflow to ensure prompt sample turnaround times and accuracy
• Support department metallurgists in trials and product/process improvement testing

Requirements

• 4 year degree in Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering or Materials Science
• Additional 4 year degrees in other majors may be allowable depending on curriculum
• Experience with reading, understanding, and conveying technical specifications
• Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with a history of technical report writing
• Organizational and time management skills - ability and desire to manage multiple projects
• Computer literacy including Office Suite and basic database query
• Desire to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced, learning, and startup environment

Preferred

• Prior experience in wrought aluminum inspection and characterization
• Experience in end-use cases such as can, automotive, or industrial applications
• Experience in more than one area of aluminum material testing
• Startup experience
