Lab Medical Technologist - Microbiology-Per-Diem
A Brief Overview
Performs moderate to high complexity testing.
Evaluates specimens and test orders
- Determines rejections according to established guidelines.
- Maintains and assures positive identity of all patient specimens, specimen types and aliquots throughout the analytical process.
- Stores specimens properly.
- Fulfills other specimen handling and processing tasks.
- Enters/verifies all results completely and accurately.
- Performs and records tests in one or more sections of the Laboratory under the indirect supervision of a section supervisor according to Lab policy.
Supervises personnel
- Meets productivity standards/turnaround time of the department.
- Maintains efficient workflow.
- Recognizes testing errors/discrepancies or problems affecting test results.
- Corrects the problem or notifies appropriate supervisor on a timely basis.
Operates instruments
- Operates all instruments according to accepted written protocols.
- Recognizes and identifies instrument problems, performs trouble shooting and seeks help of proper resources if needed.
Quality Control and Maintenance
- Performs and documents all Quality Control, routine and no-routine maintenance according to established Laboratory protocol.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
Proficiency Testing
- Ensures that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
- Calls and documents abnormal, critical or STAT results according to established protocol.
Correlates Test Results
- Correlates test results with diagnosis and/or compares with previous results if available.
- Recognizes and resolves problems or inconsistencies.
Uses Hospital Information Systems
- Uses the hospital (HIS) and laboratory information systems (LIS) and their application to all aspects of job related functions.
- Recognizes and resolves minor computer problems.
- Notifies LIS manager of problems.
Clean Workplace
- Maintains a clean, neat and orderly workplace.
- Cleans refrigerators, incubators, centrifuges, computer terminal screens and all general laboratory equipment.
- Processes receipt of departmental supplies.
- Labels, records and stores supplies received.
- Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies.
- Maintains inventory as needed for department.
Trains Others
- Participates in orientation, instruction and training of others (new personnel/off-hour staff members and students) as required by department.
- Instructs Nursing personnel, or other health care workers in patient preparation for tests and in obtaining and handling specimens.
- Auxiliary responsibilities may include assisting physicians, hospital personnel, patients and general public with pertinent laboratory information.
- Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories.
Assists Section Supervisor
- Assumes responsibilities of section supervisors in their absence.
- Informs section supervisor or laboratory administration of problems which affect the safety, function or reputation of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine or the hospital in a timely and judicious manner.
Standard Precautions and Infection Control
- Understands and practices standard precautions and infection control to protect both self and patient.
- Practices hospital and laboratory safety according to policies and procedures.
- Is familiar with emergency procedures, codes and use of personal protective equipment.
Reports Incidents
- Reports incidents as necessary.
Education Qualifications
- Associate's Degree Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related life Sciences.
- Required or Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related life Sciences.
Experience Qualifications
Experience preferred. Recent graduates are welcome and encouraged to apply.
Licenses and Certifications
- ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist.
- ASCP certification or eligible Required upon hire.

Pay Range
$34.50/hour - $47.00/hour
