About the role
Reporting to the Principal Engineer, this role ensures the efficient daily operation of the Geotechnical and Construction Material Laboratory at our new Orlando location. You will set up a new CMT lab focused on geotechnical soils testing, concrete testing, and asphalt testing.
Responsibilities
- Manage, oversee, perform testing, and submit testing results for both public and private clients.
- Generate, calculate, and compile laboratory testing reports and issue to clients; supervise others performing the same.
- Maintain and organize laboratory workload to meet deadlines and proactively assess workflow bottlenecks for efficient operations.
- Oversee lab testing procedures, including setup, load application, instrumentation, data acquisition, analyses, and cleanup.
- Ensure timely entry of lab KPIs and billing information weekly.
- Identify needs and perform research for new testing procedures.
- Maintain the Quality Management System (QMS) and ensure testing complies with AASHTO and FDOT accreditation.
- Oversee equipment calibrations, maintenance, upgrades, procurement, and repairs.
- Communicate internally and externally with clients and staff.
- Assist in cultivating client relationships with existing and new clients.
- Maintain lab cleanliness, organization, and inventory, including supply labeling and record-keeping.
- Oversee lab safety and standard operating procedures (SOPs), including specimen/chemical handling, disposal, and storage.
- Work in an environment with moderate to loud noise, dusty conditions, and extended standing; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Weekend and overtime work as needed; limited overnight and interstate travel may be required.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- BA/BS in a related discipline (BS in civil engineering preferred) or equivalent experience.
- 5–10 years’ experience leading and motivating a laboratory or technical group.
- Experience in process-driven operations and people management.
- Proficiency in MS Excel and Word.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
- ACI and FDOT/CTQP certifications preferred; must acquire within 1 year if not held at start.
- Experience in soil and rock laboratory work preferred.
- Mechanically inclined for equipment troubleshooting and repairs.
