About the role
The College of Dentistry is seeking a Lab Manager to join the Biomedical Sciences department. This position requires an expert level of experience in laboratory management and compliance.
Responsibilities
- Serves as the primary point of contact for laboratory operations and administrative activities.
- Oversees purchasing, receiving, inventory management, and maintenance of laboratory supplies, reagents, equipment, and consumables.
- Tracks expenditures, assists with budget monitoring, and maintains financial records for laboratory accounts and grants.
- Captures equipment installation, maintenance, calibration, and repairs.
- Maintains laboratory inventories, databases, records, and documentation.
- Aids with grant administration, progress reports, and laboratory reporting requirements.
- Captures and maintains regulatory compliance activities, including IACUC, IBC, IRB, biosafety, and other institutional requirements.
- Aids with preparation, submission, amendment, and renewal of research protocols.
- Maintains laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety manuals, training records, and compliance documentation.
- Manages laboratory inspections and ensures compliance with university, state, and federal regulations.
- Manages chemical, biological, and hazardous waste disposal procedures.
- Independently performs and assists with research experiments.
- Performs tissue collection, processing, cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence, microscopy, and image analysis.
- Assists with rodent colony management, genotyping, tissue harvesting, and behavioral testing.
- Prepares reagents, buffers, and experimental materials.
- Maintains detailed experimental records and laboratory notebooks.
- Assists with data analysis, figure preparation, manuscript preparation, and research presentations.
- Trains laboratory personnel in research techniques and operation of specialized laboratory equipment.
- Supervises student workers, volunteers, and research personnel.
- Coordinates schedules, task assignments, and laboratory workflows.
- Aids with onboarding and training of new laboratory members.
- Ensures personnel maintain required safety and compliance training.
- Promotes a safe, organized, and collaborative laboratory environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five years of related experience in laboratory management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical sciences, neuroscience, chemistry, or a related scientific field.
- Five years of experience in a research laboratory, laboratory operations, laboratory management, or related scientific environment.
- Experience with immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence, tissue sectioning, microscopy, image analysis, and molecular biology techniques.
- Experience working with rodent models.
- Experience with animal surgeries, behavioral assays, and tissue collection.
- Experience with IACUC and laboratory regulatory compliance.
- Experience supporting NIH-funded biomedical research programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of laboratory operations, safety practices, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of purchasing, inventory control, and budget management procedures.
- Knowledge of biological, chemical, and hazardous material handling and disposal requirements.
- Ability to organize multiple projects and prioritize competing deadlines.
- Ability to interpret policies, regulations, and procedural requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and university administrative systems.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and regulatory personnel.
