About the Role

This is a full-time night shift position as a Group Lead in the Histology department at Trinity Health Ann Arbor, with a schedule from 12:00 AM to 8:30 AM.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology, Histotechnology, or equivalent work experience, or related science (requirements vary by assigned section).
  • Medical Technologist (MT) or Histotechnologist (HT) certification from ASCP or NCLS preferred.
  • Minimum of two to four years of progressively responsible experience as a Medical or Histo Technologist.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to work independently with a high level of organization, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact with laboratory personnel, patients, and other medical professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and reviews the work of laboratory personnel in the assigned group to ensure proper test and procedure performance, validity, and accuracy of results.
  • Oversees inventory to maintain adequate supplies and materials for the assigned group.
  • Provides technical and procedural guidance to subordinates; acts as an interdepartmental liaison for problem resolution.
  • Orients, trains, and evaluates technical and non-technical personnel to ensure adherence to departmental and hospital policies.
  • Maintains and evaluates quality control and preventative maintenance programs; troubleshoots and repairs equipment as needed.
  • Assists the Section Chief in preparing and maintaining laboratory quality control and procedure manuals.
  • Recommends and participates in the selection, transfer, promotion, and discharge of subordinates alongside the Section Manager.
  • Supports laboratory marketing efforts, including service emphasis, development of supporting materials, and direct market contacts.
  • Participates in evaluating and developing new laboratory techniques while maintaining proper records.
  • Recommends improvements in methods, equipment, and personnel to enhance group functionality.
  • Monitors test utilization patterns for inpatients and outpatients and develops methods to positively impact these patterns.
  • Assists the Section Manager in preparing and evaluating variance reports and workload data.
  • Monitors compliance with the Laboratory Safety Program in the assigned area.
  • Actively participates in the laboratory’s educational activities, including intra- and interdepartmental in-service programs.
  • Stays current in areas of responsibility through seminar attendance and self-study.
  • Manages work assignments, scheduling, and payroll verification for respective cost center(s).
  • Performs the duties of a full-time medical technologist in addition to managerial and administrative responsibilities.
  • Provides quality patient care by considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs through competent clinical practice.
  • Demonstrates unit/area competencies and assists in training technologists, technicians, lab assistants, clerical staff, and others.
