Lab Associate I

Tuesday to Saturday, 4:00 PM to 12:30 AM. Includes a 10% evening shift differential and 10% weekend shift differential.

Pay

Pay range: $18.39 - $27.58 per hour. Salary offers consider relevant skills, training, experience, education, certifications, market factors, and organizational factors. Eligible employees may receive a 10% shift differential for second shift hours and 15% for third shift hours. Successful candidates may also be eligible for annual performance bonus compensation.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and organizes samples for testing, including sample racking, aliquoting, and tube preparation
• Labels, handles, processes, prepares, transports, and stores specimens
• Identifies sample problems and assists in resolving them appropriately
• Prepares testing equipment and assists with preventive maintenance; notifies technical staff of equipment problems
• Assists licensed personnel or delegated supervisor in pre-analytic and post-analytic testing activities
• Prepares pre-analytical reagents and controls using automated or fixed volume measuring devices; submits documentation for approval
• Prepares and maintains complete and accurate records of reagents or media using established procedures and formulas
• Maintains inventory of consumable items, including ordering, unpacking, logging, dating, storing, and rotating stock
• Performs inventory of laboratory items, including restocking benches and equipment
• Sorts and accessions incoming specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and delivers them to designated testing areas
• Performs data entry, transcribes data, and prepares reports for licensed personnel’s review
• Tallies workload data and prepares reports as requested
• Assists in the performance of quality control procedures
• Prepares protocols, logs, or other appropriate documents
• Identifies specimen problems and resolves or escalates them to licensed personnel or delegated supervisor
• Answers phones, transfers calls, and takes accurate messages
• Maintains confidentiality of client information
• Ensures laboratory areas are neat, clean, and organized
• Complies with all health and safety policies, procedures, and practices; uses personal protective equipment
• Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
• Some college courses preferred; two to three years of college courses preferred
• 1–2 years of laboratory experience preferred
• Basic knowledge of operating non-complex equipment (required for Histopathology or Cytology departments)
• Working knowledge of reagent stability and storage
• Awareness of factors that influence test results
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Strong typing skills desirable
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Automation skills helpful

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Lifting and carrying objects: 1–10 pounds frequently, 11–25 pounds occasionally, 26–50 pounds seldom; objects over 50 pounds require assistance
• Performs repetitive tasks with dominant hand
• Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods
• Good eye and hand coordination
