About the role

The role of Lab Assistant at MercyOne involves supporting various laboratory departments by assisting technical staff in specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting. This position ensures accuracy and efficiency in specimen handling and contributes to reliable test processes and smooth laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

• Supports technical staff in the collection, processing, and analysis of laboratory tests necessary for patient diagnosis and treatment.
• Accurately collects and processes specimens, including venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks, ensuring proper specimen collection according to laboratory policy.
• Manages specimens, registers and logs them in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), evaluates specimen adequacy, and scans required documentation into the patient record.
• Performs specimen processing tasks such as identification, aliquoting, plate streaking, slide preparation, and special handling, following laboratory protocols.
• Collaborates with laboratory staff and clients to resolve problematic patient specimens and test orders.
• Operates laboratory information systems proficiently for accurate data entry and workflow management.
• Contributes to general laboratory operations by restocking supplies, participating in peer teaching, and engaging in department or hospital committees and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
• Comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
• Personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and caring, capable of inspiring and motivating others.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
