Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist FT Days

About the role

The role of Lab Assistant at MercyOne involves supporting various laboratory departments by assisting technical staff in specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting. This includes performing venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks, ensuring proper specimen collection, managing add-on orders and pending lists, and resolving problematic specimens.

Responsibilities

• Supports technical staff in specimen collection, processing, and reporting.
• Accurately collects and labels specimens according to laboratory policy.
• Registers and logs specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Performs specimen processing and documentation as per laboratory protocols.
• Collaborates with laboratory staff and clients to resolve test issues.
• Operates laboratory information systems for accurate data entry and workflow management.
• Contributes to general laboratory operations by restocking supplies, participating in peer teaching, and engaging in department or hospital committees and projects.

Requirements

• Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
• Comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
• Personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and caring, inspiring and motivating others.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.

Skills

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of infection control and safety procedures.
