Lab Assistant II (Limited Pool)

About the role

The University of California, Merced is seeking a laboratory technician to perform standard repetitive laboratory and field experimental procedures. This role requires technical scientific knowledge and skills, and may involve duties such as preparing samples for radiochemical analyses, processing serum from whole blood, and grinding tissues.

Responsibilities

• Prepare samples for radiochemical analyses
• Prepare complex reagents and media using basic ingredients
• Process serum from whole blood
• Prepare components required for media making
• Prepare specimens for examination by professional and/or academic personnel
• Prepare concentration specimens
• Remove fluids and preservatives by pipetting and using solvents
• Prepare smear and imprint impressions
• Process and section tissues
• Prepare and stain slides
• Grind tissues and place in suspension for passage into host animals
• Dissect laboratory animals exposing tissues for examination
• Maintain clean and safe work environment
• Stock laboratory with standard supplies
• Assist in setting up and maintaining laboratory equipment
• Perform word processing using Microsoft Word
• Enter data on PC and/or Mac

Requirements

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma
• Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in natural, physical, or social sciences, and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Organize and prioritize a diversified workload with attention to detail and multiple deadlines
• Function efficiently and well in a team environment
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and students
• Coordinate field/lab usage assignments
• Maintain accurate database files
• Perform word processing using Microsoft Word and data entry on PC and/or Mac
• Maintain clean and safe work environment and keep laboratory stocked
• Knowledge of routine maintenance and proper use of laboratory equipment

Qualifications

• High school or a General Education Diploma
• Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Pay

The budgeted hourly range for this position is Step 1: $27.10/hr. The hiring range is Step 1: $27.10/hr - Step 5: $32.65/hr.
