Lab Assistant I - Phlebotomist - PD

About the Role

The Laboratory Assistant I (Outpatient Phlebotomist) position supports outpatient laboratory daily operations by providing excellence in patient services, proper phlebotomy specimen collection, alliquoting, complete accuracy in Epic registration, centrifuge usage, drug screens, error-free documentation as well as overall compliance with regulatory standards. The Lab Assistant 1 role is essential to maintaining efficient workflow, patient satisfaction and quality laboratory results for subsequent patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Performs proper venipuncture and post care of phlebotomy site along with labeling each specimen with 2 forms of ID with zero labeling errors.
  • Accurate patient registration, requisitioning, and operational fluency in Epic.
  • Proper labeling, processing and preparation of patient specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Complete specimen batches in a timely manner for courier pickup or send specimens through the tube system properly.
  • Communicate outpatient needs for adequate inventory and is proficient with system reporting requests.
  • Completing all documentation requirements including outpatient daily, weekly and monthly checklists.
  • Follow organizational policies and maintain a compliant environment including adherence to all laboratory procedures, HIPPAA standards, infection control and safety guidelines.
  • Participates in quality assurance programs and maintains all requirements for departmental work flow.
  • Maintains educational requirements, outpatient in services and assigned training as it relates to outpatient lab workflows.
  • Is flexible and willing to make changes for the benefit of the team.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Vocational phlebotomy (or related) course/program, or 2 years of working phlebotomy experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Problem solving ability and attention to detail is preferred
  • Good written and oral communication skills preferred.
  • Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes.

Physical Requirements

  • May require lifting (Up to 20 pounds) and carrying supplies.
  • The position is frequently in motion and requires repetitive use of hands (e.g. computer keyboard usage), sitting, squatting, walking or standing for long periods of time, up to 6 hours per day.

Location and Travel Requirements

Onsite at Cayuga Medical Center 101 Dates Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850, with ability to work at other area locations as scheduled/assigned. Per Diem position will vary depending on available shifts and the Outpatient Lab location with staffing coverage needs. However the Patient Service Centers sites operate Monday - Friday from 7am to 5pm, several locations open on Saturday from 7am to 12pm and closed on Sunday.

Pay

Standard Rate of $17.79 to $24.04 per hour plus benefits
