Lab Assistant I

About the role

The Laboratory Assistant I supports and provides customer service to the clinical laboratory department. Duties include receiving, processing, labeling, and distributing specimens, as well as performing waived or moderate testing if necessary.

Responsibilities

• Receive, process, label, and distribute specimens
• Perform waived or moderate testing as directed by the Clinical Laboratory Manager or Director
• Communicate with nursing and laboratory staff regarding specimen issues
• Understand and follow established protocols and procedures
• Perform clerical duties as needed

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Phlebotomy experience, preferred
• Ability to read, write, comprehend English, and perform computer functions
• Professional telephone etiquette and effective verbal and written communication skills
• Problem-solving ability in complex situations
• Organizational skills and self-motivation
• Comfortable working with human specimens
• Completion of training in unpacking and putting away inventory items

Qualifications

• Must be able to work assigned shifts
• Must be comfortable working with human specimens

Skills

• Understanding of laboratory specimens and HIS/LIS computer systems
