About the role
The Laboratory Assistant performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations. This position assists with the collection, handling, and preparation of specimens for laboratory testing as directed and according to established departmental standards. This role supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
Responsibilities
- Verification and labeling of specimens
- Handling and transporting specimens
- Preparation of slides
- Maintaining necessary supplies
- Collection of blood according to established procedures in a manner that supports quality patient care
- Distinguish colors as required by the role
- Perform department-specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool
- Strict compliance with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements
- Acquire knowledge of laboratory information system utilization within 3 months of on-the-job training
- Achieve proficiency in Clinical Applications within 30-60 days from date of hire
Requirements
- High School Diploma or highest level of degree required
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field strongly preferred for Histology and Cytology positions
- ASCP/Phlebotomy certification or registry eligible preferred; previous hospital phlebotomy experience may be substituted for certification
- Incumbents working in a phlebotomist role must maintain 12 CEUs annually
- BLS certification required (new hires must obtain within 6 months of hire or transfer)
- Knowledge of medical terminology required
- Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire
Work Environment
- Potential exposure to hazards and risks of the hospital environment, including infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury
- Increased amounts of standing, bending, and manual manipulation, as well as some light lifting
