Summit Pathology is an independent pathology laboratory owned by a practice of board-certified pathologists. We have been serving hospital systems and physician offices in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska for more than thirty-five years. With a variety of subspecialties, we offer world-class expertise, state-of-the-art disease detection, and exceptional customer service in areas such as breast pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology (including flow cytometry), gastrointestinal pathology, dermatopathology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, and clinical chemistry.

About the role

The Pathology Hospital Tech will work closely with pathologists and hospital staff to provide exceptional care to patients through assisting with processing and preparation of surgical and cytology specimens. This position routinely rotates to UCHealth and Banner facilities within Northern Colorado, including locations in Greeley, Loveland, and Fort Collins.

Hours for this position are variable, usually between 7:30 AM–5:00 PM in rotation through the hospitals and 9:30 AM–7:00 PM in rotation through our main lab.

Responsibilities

  • Assess specimen quality, make necessary corrections, and prepare the specimen for processing or grossing.
  • Accession specimens into the supported LIS system, ensuring accurate data entry and quality control of requisitions.
  • Demonstrate absolute accuracy in the identification and accessioning of numbers and names.
  • Accurately file blocks and slides daily and maintain the slide file room.
  • Rotate through various hospital facilities and become accustomed to all areas of the hospital.
  • Assist on routine needle procedures including fine needle aspirations, CT biopsies, and endoscopy procedures.
  • Prepare and stain slides, and assist with frozen section specimens from the operating rooms.
  • Handle inventory, upkeep, and organization of the offsite gross rooms.
  • Interact with hospital staff, answer and triage phone calls, and demonstrate positive customer interactions and proper phone etiquette.
  • Work and communicate cooperatively with team members to identify and complete lab responsibilities and meet department goals.
  • Participate in department activities to improve patient care/lab systems, share new information with team members, and mentor new staff as requested.
  • Follow all procedures, policies, and safety standards; report and remove unsafe equipment and attend safety education sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on Summit Pathology needs or requirements.

Requirements

  • An earned associate degree (or higher) in a laboratory science obtained from an accredited institution; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively problem-solve issues.
  • Ability to organize work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality to protect patient privacy.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Competency and accuracy using multiple computer systems.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, including medical terminology.
  • Previous data entry or laboratory/healthcare experience preferred.
