Lab Assistant- Histology/Full-Time/2nd Shift/Rosemont
About the role
Major Responsibilities include receiving and sorting specimens, assisting with detailed specimen handling, packaging and tracking specimens for transport, performing specimen storage and retrieval, resolving specimen identification and requisition problems, performing limited testing under CLIA guidelines, entering and verifying test requests, notifying providers of abnormal results, performing preventative maintenance on equipment, running quality control checks, reviewing logs and documentation, processing specimens for testing, and assisting with workflow improvement.
Responsibilities
- Receives and sorts specimens and assists with detailed specimen handling
- Packages and tracks specimens for transport
- Performs specimen storage and retrieval
- Ensures specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing
- Resolves specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarifies requests
- Performs limited testing under CLIA guidelines, according to established policies and procedures
- Enters and verifies test requests into the laboratories' computer system
- Notifies providers of stat, critical, and other abnormal results and exceptions as defined by policy and procedure
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and makes minor repairs when needed
- Runs quality control checks
- Reviews logs and documentation to ensure compliance needs are met
- Reviews new lot/new shipment on testing in areas of oversight to ensure QC performed as needed
- Processes specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments, while maintaining proper specimen identification
- Acts as a resource and trains new employees
- Affords assistance to Supervisor with workflow improvement, dept. projects and implementation of system initiatives, where appropriate
- Affords assistance to supervisor and technical specialist in inspection preparedness
Requirements
Minimum Education And Experience Required: Typically requires 3 years of experience in related laboratory functions.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required: Demonstrates knowledge and experience in laboratory functions; demonstrates knowledge of medical terms; basic computer skills including experience using computer software applications; keyboarding and typing skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; good listening skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees.
Qualifications
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions: Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job; good manual dexterity; frequently lifts up to 10 lbs.; occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.; must be able to sit, stand, walk and bend the majority of the workday; may be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radioactive and/or infectious agents; will be exposed to human blood, tissue, and body fluids; must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
