About the role
The Laboratory Assistant supports laboratory operations by collecting, processing, and managing patient specimens to ensure accurate and timely diagnostic testing in accordance with established protocols. This role maintains specimen integrity throughout the pre-analytical process, including receiving, centrifuging, aliquoting, storing, and distributing samples. The Laboratory Assistant collaborates with clinical and laboratory personnel to facilitate efficient workflows and resolve collection or testing issues. This position may also perform basic laboratory techniques and testing consistent with CLIA requirements.
Responsibilities
- Collect, identify, label, and process patient specimens in accordance with department policies, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established standards.
- Prepare and transport specimens for analysis, including centrifuging, aliquoting, and storage, while maintaining orderly and timely flow to technical departments.
- Review laboratory requisitions for accuracy, medical necessity, and the institution's ability to perform or route testing, communicating with clinical staff as needed to resolve issues.
- Support patient registration, assist with specimen automation loading, and collaborate with nursing and laboratory personnel to facilitate efficient laboratory operations.
- Conduct phlebotomy via venipuncture or micro-technique and provide training and guidance to other laboratory assistants as directed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Less than 1 year of prior laboratory assistance and/or phlebotomy training required at certain laboratory locations.
