Lab Assistant

About the role

The Lab Assistant works with the Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, and graduate student researchers to coordinate and support studies of predictors of treatment outcome within the context of the UCLA Psychology Clinic. Responsibilities include managing data collection, developing and maintaining databases (including electronic health records), and providing data analysis using programs such as Excel and SPSS. The role involves conducting in-depth phone screenings to assess mental health history and eligibility for participation, acting as a liaison with psychological patients, their family members, treatment providers, faculty, and graduate students, and managing scheduling of clinical research participants. Additionally, the Lab Assistant assists with the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including scheduling, managing phone calls, and email inquiries.

Responsibilities

• Manage data collection, database development, and maintenance, including electronic health records.
• Perform data analysis using Excel, SPSS, and other programs.
• Conduct in-depth phone screenings to assess mental health history and eligibility for research participation.
• Act as a liaison between psychological patients, their family members, treatment providers, faculty, and graduate students.
• Schedule clinical research participants and manage day-to-day laboratory operations, including phone calls and email inquiries.

Requirements

• Understanding of lab research methods. (Required)
• Coursework in Statistics and Research Design. (Required)
• Experience working or volunteering in research lab settings. (Required)
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills for eliciting sensitive information and communicating effectively with diverse individuals. (Required)
• Proficiency in computer skills, including word processing, web applications, email, spreadsheets, and databases (especially Excel, Word, Outlook, and SPSS). (Required)
• Ability to independently prioritize assignments and adapt to changing needs. (Required)
• Ability to use standard office equipment, including multi-line telephones, recording equipment, and scanners. (Required)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. (Required)
• Excellent organizational and time management skills. (Required)
• Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism and good decision-making in difficult situations. (Required)
• Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments. (Required)
• Demonstrated ability to handle confidential materials with discretion. (Required)
• Knowledge of payment processing systems (Cash-net and PCI). (Preferred)
• Knowledge of forms and submission procedures for obtaining research approval from the UCLA Institutional Review Board and Office for the Protection of Human Subjects. (Preferred)

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Psychobiology, or a related field, or equivalent experience/training. (Preferred)
