Lab Asistant/Phlebotomist FT Evenings
About the role
The role of Lab Assistant at MercyOne Dubuque involves supporting various laboratory departments by assisting technical staff in specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of laboratory tests.
Responsibilities
- Aid in ensuring specimens, patient information, and testing workflows are handled accurately and efficiently.
- Contribute to reliable test processes and smooth laboratory operations by maintaining timely turnaround, data integrity, and compliance with quality and safety standards.
- Perform venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks as appropriate for patient age (from neonates to geriatric adults).
- Accurately collect and label specimens according to laboratory policy.
- Register and log specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), evaluate specimen adequacy, and scan required documentation into the patient record.
- Process specimens by identifying, aliquoting, plate streaking, slide preparation, and following laboratory protocols.
- Resolve problematic patient specimens and test orders in collaboration with laboratory staff and clients.
- Follow safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures and support efficient workflow practices.
- Operate laboratory information systems proficiently for accurate data entry and workflow management.
- Contribute to general laboratory operations by restocking supplies, participating in peer teaching, and engaging in department or hospital committees and projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
- Comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
