About the role
The Department of Laboratory Animal Resources invites applications for an Animal Technician to join their team. This position begins at LAT level I and follows a career ladder to LAT IV, with certifications from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Responsibilities
- LAT I (Entry level): Provide basic animal care, including food, water, and shelter. Assist with health checks, cage washes, and other tasks.
- LAT II: Perform advanced animal care duties, including clinical sample collection, animal euthanasia, and record-keeping. Obtain AALAS ALAT certification.
- LAT III: Manage animal care, train junior technicians, and assist with special projects. Obtain AALAS LAT certification.
- LAT IV: Supervise LAT I and LAT II technicians, handle scheduling, and assist with special projects. Obtain AALAS LATG certification.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus at least one year of directly related work experience.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) preferred.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, work around hazardous materials, stand for long periods, and participate in the occupational health program.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Experience in a laboratory setting, working with lab animals, and operating large laboratory equipment.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of directly related work experience.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) preferred.
Skills
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel).
- Experience in a laboratory setting.

Pay
- Lab Animal Tech I: $16.37/hr
- Lab Animal Tech II: $17.72/hr
- Lab Animal Tech III: $19.50/hr
- Lab Animal Tech IV: $20.00 - $21.41/hr
Schedule
Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with rotating weekends.
