About the role
FT and PT position available.
Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomies and capillary punctures on inpatients and outpatients; obtain adequate specimen from all patient age ranges—neonatal to geriatric.
- Prepare, organize, and distribute specimens in the lab for testing.
- Collect specimens at the proper time according to procedure; collect STATS within 15 minutes of notification.
- Correctly identify patient by using two identifiers prior to specimen collection.
- Correctly label patient specimens with patient name, date, identification number, time and phlebotomist initials.
- Perform test order entry for laboratory testing.
- Take phone orders from physician for patient testing and correctly complete required documentation for phone orders.
- Perform general cleaning, wash glassware, and maintain blood collection area and equipment.
- Be familiar with Laboratory office routine and able to function in office if necessary (filing, logging, looking up results, etc.).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform breath alcohol testing and collect urine drug of abuse screens according to procedure.
Qualifications
- Must be able to read, write neatly, file, and organize.
- Due to extremely large amounts of patient contact, must have outstanding grooming habits and outgoing personality.
Experience
- Previous healthcare and phlebotomy experience preferred.
Physical Demands
- Requires frequent sitting.
- Occasional walking and standing.
- Occasionally required to lift and carry up to 35 lbs.
- Eye-hand, manual, and finger dexterity are required.
- Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
- Requires working irregular hours and under stressful conditions.
- Some exposure to sharps, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and body fluids is required.
- Occasional bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and grasping is required.
- Overhead work is occasionally required.
- Occasional pushing and pulling of objects up to 75 pounds.
- Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols.
- Use of office equipment such as computer terminals, telephones, or copiers is required.
Working Conditions
- Shifts will vary depending upon the needs of the Laboratory and could be early morning, late afternoon, early evening, weekends, and holidays.
- Routinely required to wear appropriate clothing for the procurement of Laboratory specimens; if regular street clothes are chosen, an approved lab jacket or coat must be worn when dealing with patients.
