Lab Aide / Phlebotomist

SEIU Pay Range: $24.47 to $36.66 dependent on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomies and capillary blood collections from inpatients and outpatients, both on-site and off-site.
  • Process and order testing on specimens for reference laboratories under the direction of the Manager and/or Medical Technologist.
  • Perform CLIA waived laboratory testing and follow Quality Control Practices related to it.
  • Track all specimens submitted to pathology.
  • Maintain good public relations with physicians, their staff, patients, and the general public.
  • Instruct patients on proper collection of urine and stool specimens.
  • Collect nasal washings from outpatients.
  • Collect urine specimens for pre-employment drug screens using a chain of custody.
  • Ensure front-end laboratory compliance and follow Medicare Medical Necessity rules.
  • Monitor customer concerns and daily workflow.
  • Perform other duties within the laboratory as needed.

Requirements

  • Frequent access to patient records; must maintain full confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Strong written, oral, and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and blood collection techniques for all age groups.
  • Experience with pre-employment drug screen collections.
  • Understanding of pre-analytical testing variables.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and excellent customer service.
  • Act as an ongoing liaison between clients and providers.
  • Knowledge of laboratory compliance and Medical Necessity.
  • Knowledge of testing requirements for collecting, processing, and ordering.

Qualifications

  • Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
  • High School diploma or equivalent (copy of diploma required).
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomist program or on-the-job training with experience.
  • One year of experience as a phlebotomist desired, preferably in a hospital and/or clinic setting.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Work with tight turnaround times for specimen collection and transport back to the laboratory.
  • Frequent exposure to disagreeable elements such as odors and infectious materials.
  • Frequent walking to collect and pick up specimens from remote sites.
  • Position involves standing, walking, stooping, and occasional carrying and lifting of lightweight materials (up to 20 pounds).
  • May be required to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Requires visual acuity and depth perception to recognize words and numbers.
  • Requires hand and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination to use a computer keyboard and common office equipment.
