About the role

The Autonomous Specialist is responsible for operating and evaluating a self-driving vehicle in autonomous mode, including collecting data, providing feedback, and offering ride-hail service to the general public.

Responsibilities

• Maintain Transdev’s high standard of safety, inside and outside of the vehicle.
• Demonstrate situational awareness, an understanding of the technology, and a willingness to adjust to environmental changes.
• Communicate courteously with management, engineers, and the public as the deputy for technology.
• Respond quickly to changing and potentially high-pressure environments.
• Work individually or in small groups of 2-10 people.
• Operate a vehicle 6-8 hours a day, up to 5 days a week.
• Follow established diagnostic guides to troubleshoot driver support modules, including mobile devices, laptops, and other work devices.
• Provide rides in the autonomous vehicle to the general public.
• Monitor multiple software systems with constant focus.
• Provide concise, clear, and accurate verbal and written feedback regarding the vehicle’s operations.
• Manage the vehicle’s key security process.
• Complete daily reports and document procedures and tests.
• Interact with the public in a polite and professional manner, assisting in educating them on self-driving technology when necessary.
• Operate autonomous vehicles on both defined and undefined routes, including a variety of environmental conditions.
• Operate onboard data collection systems.
• Ride as a passenger in an autonomous vehicle where the driver may have little control over the vehicle’s operations.
• Safely operate a non-autonomous vehicle while monitoring the location of a driverless vehicle during recovery operations.
• Responsible for the safe recovery of the autonomous vehicle, including parking safely behind the driverless vehicle, setting up protection, disengaging the self-driving car, and driving it to a safe location.
• Apply safety procedures to any situation involving rescue of the self-driving car.
• Oversee and ensure the security and importing of disks, including accounting for them at the beginning and end of shift.
• Assist as a point of contact for client Security and Facilities staff for issues and repairs at remote sites.
• Exercise excellent customer service while assisting passengers to disembark, board the rescue vehicle, and safely drive them to their destination.
• Assist software progress by testing new features and documenting recurring issues or potential bugs.
• Follow weekly release emails and bug reports to stay up to date.
• Work closely with the Operations Supervisor to keep demo documentation accurate and up to date (e.g., create/maintain demo routes and best practices).
• Represent the client by showcasing self-driving technology to guests in a friendly, concise manner.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of experience driving on public roads (additional experience preferred).
• High School Diploma or GED required; four-year college degree in a related field (e.g., industrial or applied sciences) preferred.

Skills

• Ability to parallel park with minimal assistance.
• Proficiency with a laptop computer and GSuite apps (e.g., Gmail, Hangouts, Sheets, Docs).
• Proficiency with using a touchscreen smartphone (Android preferred but not required).
• Typing speed of at least 40 adjusted words per minute.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to describe thoughts quickly and concisely.
• Ability to respond quickly and simultaneously to multiple scenarios.
• Adaptability to new and developing technology.
• Strong cross-functional verbal and written communication and issue escalation skills.
• Ability to multitask multiple technologies, including communications devices and vehicle status systems.
• Ability to work specific shifts, including early mornings, evenings, overnights, and/or weekends, as well as travel for up to one month.
• Occasionally required to work overtime and be recalled for peak operational demand.
• Ability to perform your shift from a compact crossover vehicle; periodically exposed to the elements and outdoors.
• Travel up to 20% of the time.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Self-motivated with good judgment in fast-paced, high-stress environments.

Physical Requirements

• Routine and repetitive standing, walking, and long periods of sitting.
• Use of extremities to include hands, fingers, grip, and handle or feel; talk or hear; climb stairs and/or ladders.
• May be routinely required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must be able to routinely and repetitively lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.
• Must use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Most work is accomplished outdoors or in a vehicle; may require exposure to inclement weather and extreme environments.
• May need to operate alternative modes of transportation such as a bicycle or scooter.

Pre-Employment Requirements

• Must be 21 years old.
• Does not have more than 1 point on the driving record (California) or one non-major moving violation in the preceding three years.
• Has not had any driver’s license suspension or revocation based on driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the past 10 years.
• Never been the at-fault driver of a motor vehicle involved in an accident that resulted in injury or death of any person.
• Must have and maintain a driving record that meets state AVT (Autonomous Vehicle Tester) and/or other applicable regulations and laws.
• Meets driver requirements, including driving record and criminal history under applicable regulations and laws in the state(s) of operation.
• Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
• Safety-sensitive positions will also be subject to a physical screening.
• Ability to qualify for an Autonomous Vehicle Tester (AVT) license in states where required.
• Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.
