About the role

Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation Services, this position is responsible for transporting County vehicles to and from various facilities for maintenance and repairs. The role also includes evaluating and performing troubleshooting, minor repairs, and maintenance on vehicles. When needed, the employee may serve as a driver, providing safe, efficient, and customer-friendly transportation via bus, van, or County vehicle to the public within the County and surrounding counties.

Responsibilities

  • Transports vehicles, buses, and parts to various facilities for vehicle maintenance.
  • Fuels and cleans vehicles throughout the day or at the end of the shift.
  • Maintains the garage, including floors and frequently used areas, in a clean and functional manner.
  • May function as a driver to fill shift shortages, special runs, or special events as needed.
  • Drives L.E.T.S. vehicles to transport passengers to various destinations.
  • Provides customer assistance to a variety of passengers, including school-age children and the elderly, some of whom may have special needs or require additional assistance.
  • Operates chairlift to assist passengers in boarding the bus and ensures passengers are properly secured based on standards and guidelines.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; the County may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.
  • Michigan Vehicle Driver’s License with Chauffeur designation.
  • Must pass a Michigan Department of Transportation physical and drug screen prior to employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of safe driving techniques and customer service principles.
  • Considerable knowledge of County roads, map reading, and providing customer service while transporting passengers.
  • Ability to work with a variety of people, including passengers with special needs.
  • Skill in assembling data and preparing accurate reports.
  • Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with County employees, contractors, governmental representatives, elected officials, and the public.
  • Ability to assess situations, solve problems, work under stress and deadlines, and perform in emergency situations.
  • Skill in using office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications and department-specific software.
  • Skill in using specialized vehicle transportation equipment such as ramps and securing passengers prior to transport.
  • Skill in using electronic equipment on County vehicles.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, climb, use hands and fingers, talk, hear, and view written documents. The employee uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must lift or push/pull objects up to 50 lbs without assistance; accommodations will be made as needed for objects exceeding this weight. The employee works in outdoor weather conditions while driving and is exposed to fumes, airborne particles, noxious odors, vibrations from driving a bus, and traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud.

Pay

The Driver/Porter is a temporary, part-time, non-union position with a starting pay of $21.17 per hour within the Non-Union Grade 3 Wage Scale. Approximately 19 hours per week.
