About the role
The News Editor role at KPBS involves supervising a team of reporters across radio, TV, and digital platforms. This role includes managing, editing, and assigning news coverage, ensuring accountability reporting, and providing guidance to reporters.
Responsibilities
- Works with reporters to develop impactful story ideas and ensure accountability reporting, people-centered storytelling, and a mix of thought-provoking and explanatory stories.
- Provides effective leadership, coaches, guides, and directs reporters, and conducts regular air checks and feedback sessions.
- Maintains ongoing relationships with KPBS department leaders and the local community, and participates in daily news meetings.
- Ensures timely delivery of stories to multiple deadlines, communicates risks to senior producers, and prepares written directions when out of office.
- Prioritizes a multimedia approach to all stories, assigns weekend and evening work, and prepares written direction for out-of-office situations.
- Serves as a back-up for other editors and executes corrections or clarifications across platforms as needed.
- Pitches stories to partners like NPR, the PBS NewsHour, and California Hub stations.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in editing or reporting impactful stories.
- Knowledge of current events and issues, and understanding of journalistic standards and practices.
- Ability to be highly organized and handle competing priorities within tight deadlines.
- Experience in a progressively responsible leadership role, including supervision of teams of two or more.
- Broad knowledge of San Diego, regional, state, national, and international news.
- Experience in a unionized environment and proven ability in both short-term and long-term editorial planning.
- Spanish-language fluency and experience with digital audio and video editing.
- Experience with social media production and multimedia storytelling.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional growth and development.
Qualifications
- Minimum four years of related experience, two of which in a progressively responsible supervisory or management role.
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in relevant field, or additional experience in a newsroom may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- Experience in journalism in a comparable position as an assignment editor, producer, or line editor.
- Experience as a manager in a unionized environment.
- Prior experience in public media.
- Proven ability in both short-term and long-term editorial planning.
- Experience with digital audio and video editing, and social media production.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional growth and development.

Pay
The salary range for this position is $7,500 - $8,750 per month ($90,000 - $105,000 per year) depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.
