About the role
Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents. Note and report errors in the administration of medications. Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to identify medication errors.
Responsibilities
- Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
- Avoid medication errors by verifying medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents.
- Complete necessary forms, charts, reports, etc., and submit as required.
- Participate in Quality Assurance programs and the Pharmaceutical Services Committee.
- Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications.
- Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication.
- Measure, record, and report vital signs of residents.
- Follow facility procedures for drug receipt errors, including documenting and reporting them.
- Assist in documenting and removing discontinued medications.
- Ensure proper labeling of medications.
- Document instances where prescribed medication is not administered.
- Notify appropriate personnel of medication errors or reactions.
- Follow facility procedures for holding medications for residents who are transferred or whose medications are discontinued.
- Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
- Report any unauthorized attempts to access the facility's information system.
- Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel to ensure adequate maintenance of nursing services.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident care information, including protected health information.
- Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
- Supervise other staff as needed.
Qualifications
- High school education or equivalent.
- Licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations.
Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Reasoning ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents, staff, and medical professionals.
- Physical ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds, sit, stand, walk, talk, read, hear, and use office equipment.
- Knowledge of common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relevant to the administration of medications.
