About the role

Under the direct supervision of the leadership team, the healthcare interpreter provides accurate and concise oral interpretations for spoken languages to Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients, their families, and staff in-person, over the phone, and via video conferencing throughout the hospital and clinics. The role ensures effective communication by relaying medical information between English and other languages in accordance with organizational policies, national standards, and the NCIHC code of ethics. The interpreter also assists with on-the-job training and mentoring of interns, explains hospital resources and protocols, makes appropriate referrals, and serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers. Duties are performed in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation, with additional responsibilities as required to support the department.

Responsibilities

• Provides interpreting and translation services in accordance with Corewell Health policies and procedures and the National Council on Interpreters in Healthcare (NCIHC) Code of Ethics governing the profession of interpretation.
• Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to physicians, staff, and patients to contribute to successful outcomes.
• Assists with onboarding and training of new staff by providing shadowing opportunities and instruction in healthcare interpretation, HIPAA compliance, interpreter’s code of ethics, cultural competence, and all assigned department functions.
• Maintains professional certification and qualifications by completing required training, continuing education credits, and adhering to renewal deadlines.
• Interprets over-the-phone or via video for long periods of time and walks extensively throughout the workday.
• Maintains assignment log for documentation purposes.
• Supports office operations by handling phone calls, scheduling and confirming appointments, performing data entry, maintaining records and databases, and assisting with special projects as needed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 1 year of relevant experience providing interpreting/translating services in a health care setting
• CRT-Healthcare Interpreter, Certified (CHI) - CCHI Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (required within 180 days)
• Valid Michigan Driver's License
• Auto Insurance
