About the Role

Teacher or Classroom aides provide support for full-time teachers, helping them with clerical work and classroom activities. This can involve providing individual attention to students in need of extra assistance or monitoring students while the teacher is out. A teacher's aide's job is to assist a teacher and reinforce the instruction taught in the classroom to students.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
  • Present subject matter to students under teacher guidance, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods.
  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, gymnasiums, and on field trips.
  • Conduct demonstrations to teach skills such as sports, dancing, and handicrafts.
  • Distribute and collect teaching materials, tests, and homework assignments.
  • Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Grade homework and tests, and record results.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials.
  • Observe students' performance and record data to assess progress.
  • Organize and display students' work appropriately.
  • Organize and supervise games and recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.
  • Plan, prepare, and develop teaching aids such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs.
  • Provide extra assistance to students with special needs.
  • Take and maintain class attendance records.
  • Assist with bus loading and unloading.
  • Assist librarians in school libraries.
  • Collect money from students for school-related projects.
  • Laminate teaching materials for durability.
  • Maintain classroom computers and assist students with technology.
  • Monitor classroom viewing of live or recorded courses.
  • Operate and maintain audiovisual equipment.
  • Provide disabled students with assistive devices and assistance accessing facilities.
  • Requisition and stock teaching materials and supplies.
  • Type, file, and duplicate materials.
  • Use computers and audiovisual aids to supplement presentations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum GED or high school diploma; some on-the-job training required.
  • Preferred: Associate's or bachelor's degree in education or related field.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Skills

  • Knowledge of appropriate responses when dealing with children.
  • Ability to follow teacher instructions and show educational materials effectively.
  • Proficiency in using computers and audiovisual equipment.

Physical Abilities

  • Normal vision and hearing.
  • Physical ability to bend, squat, sit on the floor, skip, run, and climb stairs.
  • Ability to crouch to a child's height and maintain eye contact.
  • Ability to safely lift or assist children weighing up to 40 pounds in emergencies.
  • Ability to reach a child 30 feet away within 30 seconds without risk to health.
  • Effective use of hands and fingers for paperwork.

Environmental Conditions

  • May work outside.
  • Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases.
