About the role

Kapolei Charter School (KCS) is a free public charter school aiming to interrupt generational poverty by offering customized educational opportunities to students who may not succeed in traditional settings. KCS provides an attractive, flexible learning environment with individualized attention to ensure all students achieve academic success.

Responsibilities

  • Develop lesson plans ensuring attainment of state learning standards and specific grade-by-grade standards set forth in the charter.
  • Plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
  • Create and deliver instruction for English curriculum as well as electives.
  • Develop and expand curriculum.
  • Monitor student progress.
  • Communicate with students and parents.
  • Set an urgent, respectful, and positive tone in the classroom.
  • Build relationships with students emphasizing college success and personal belief in their ability to succeed.
  • Take on responsibilities outside of content area instruction such as advisory, lunch duty, enrichment classes, and after school activities.
  • Demonstrate solid knowledge and understanding of the content matter.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies that are academically rigorous and highly engaging.
  • Execute detailed lesson plans mapped to specific Common Core standards.
  • Take responsibility for student progress, responding to students' needs through long and short-term planning.
  • Prepare students adequately for all required assessments.
  • Prepare at least quarterly individual student achievement reports for parents.
  • Provide an inviting, exciting, innovative, learning environment.
  • Accept and incorporate feedback and coaching from administrative staff.
  • Serve as an advisor to students, including organizing advisory groups, overseeing academic and behavioral progress.

Requirements

  • License issued by the Hawaii Department of Education with grades 7-12 English endorsement; or imminent graduation from state-approved teacher education program.
  • Prior relevant teaching experience in English courses including grammar and writing courses.
  • A strong belief that all students can succeed.
  • A do-whatever-it-takes attitude including a willingness to work occasionally on the weekend or in the evening.
  • An exceptional ability to respond well to feedback and implement it immediately.
  • Student/classroom management techniques; common academic, social, behavioral, and developmental problems of students.
  • Ability to implement effective classroom management and student care methods and techniques; speak and work effectively with students, teachers, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to assess students' progress and modify learning activities and methods as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Education: License issued by the Hawaii Department of Education with grades 7-12 English endorsement; license issued by another state with the ability to obtain a teacher license in the State of Hawaii; or imminent graduation from state-approved teacher education program.
