About the Role

Great Hearts teaching substitutes guide students in a variety of subjects across grades K-5, fostering an environment where teachers lead through intelligence, charisma, humor, moral integrity, and example—in short, through love and friendship. Our teachers strive to cultivate the minds and hearts of students in the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness.

Responsibilities

  • Create a classroom environment that feels safe for all students to learn and reach their fullest potential.
  • Follow lesson plans and maintain an orderly classroom.
  • Provide timely and meaningful evaluation/correction of student work.
  • Engage students utilizing the Socratic method.
  • Lead students through intelligence, charisma, humor, moral integrity, and example.
  • Fully embrace the school's vision of community, learning, and leadership.
  • Perform additional assigned campus duties.
  • Read, know, and support the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the school as published in the Faculty Handbook and Family Handbook.
  • Follow school policies and procedures, including the Academy Crisis Plan, to ensure student safety and security.
  • Provide reasonable assistance to students needing individual help and assist with make-up work after approved absences.
  • Communicate as needed with parents.
  • Support and enforce school dress and behavior codes, promoting orderly behavior on and off campus.
  • Keep accurate records and make reports as required by the Headmaster.
  • Evaluate and document students' day-to-day work.
  • Participate in faculty development on half-days as needed.
  • Actively pursue professional growth through graduate courses, seminars, or workshops.
  • Pursue excellence in teaching and continue developing knowledge of the great ideas and works of Western Civilization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree (required for long-term substitute roles).
  • Certification is not required for general education roles.
  • All majors are welcome.
  • Some teaching experience in K-5.
  • Knowledge or experience with Spalding or Singapore curricula (preferred).

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance in accordance with state requirements. Local travel may be required for training and professional development opportunities.
