K-5 Assistant/Apprentice Teacher

About the role

Great Hearts Academies is seeking life‑long learners passionate about shaping students' hearts and minds to join the Great Hearts Western Hills Lower School in San Antonio, TX. As a Teaching Assistant or Apprentice Teacher you will support the lead teacher in delivering a rich Core Knowledge curriculum and, through mentorship with a Master Teacher, learn the craft of teaching in a classical, liberal‑arts primary‑school environment.

Responsibilities

• Support and advance the mission of Great Hearts by contributing to a respectful, intellectually vibrant school community.
• Collaborate with teachers to support instruction, student learning, and daily classroom activities.
• Uphold school policies and promote an orderly, professional learning environment.
• Participate in faculty meetings, school events, conferences, and assigned duties.
• Pursue ongoing professional growth and deepen knowledge of the classical tradition.

Requirements

• US work authorization is required.
• Employment contingent upon successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance in accordance with state requirements.
• Associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
• Some locations (e.g., Title I schools) may require an AA degree, 60 hours of college credit, or passing a ParaProfessional proficiency exam before beginning work.
• Travel may be required locally for training and professional development opportunities.

Pay

Hourly rate: $16–$18 (non‑exempt, hourly). Reports to: Headmaster.
