K-3 Math Tutor

About the Role

This is an AmeriCorps service member position within Colorado Math Corps, a program that provides supplemental math practice to students in kindergarten through third grade. The K-3 Math Corps Tutor is placed at one elementary school to help children develop their math skills using scripted, evidence-based strategies guided by coaches. Tutors conduct assessments to ensure students are on track to reach grade-level proficiency. Members serve full-time (35-40 hours per week) during school hours, with school breaks and holidays off. The position runs from October 19th, 2026, to May 28th, 2027.

Responsibilities

• Identify students qualifying for Math Corps tutoring services using a program-designed assessment, with direction from coaches.
• Conduct paired tutoring sessions using scripted, evidence-based math strategies, maintaining high fidelity to the prescribed methods.
• Develop and maintain a weekly tutoring schedule to maximize student service, ensuring each student pair receives daily 20-minute sessions.
• Assist students in improving math skills to meet grade-level expectations.
• Document students’ daily progress and strategies accurately and timely in an online database, maintaining confidentiality of all student data.
• Regularly review student data with coaches to assess strategy effectiveness and determine if adjustments are needed.
• Accurately assess students’ continual progress through progress monitoring and benchmarking.
• Participate in regular coaching sessions (including observations) to review progress, plan, problem-solve, and set goals; act on feedback.
• Provide opportunities for family involvement, including implementing program family engagement strategies.
• Communicate and interact with students in an age- and developmentally appropriate manner.
• Foster a welcoming and supportive atmosphere by modeling respectful behavior and communication.
• Maintain professional relationships and communicate regularly with classroom teachers, coaches, and school personnel regarding student schedules, interventions, and progress.
• Record data in online systems accurately and in a timely manner.
• Demonstrate regular, timely attendance and adherence to scheduled hours.
• Commit to the full service term, completing all required hours.
• Participate in all required Math Corps training sessions, meetings, and coaching sessions, including peer professional development and member meetups; travel as necessary.
• Engage in independent service activities to ensure completion of required service hours.

Requirements

• 17 years or older by start date (17-year-olds must have guardian permission).
• U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• No more than three prior AmeriCorps terms.
• Submit to a full background check, including sex offender registry, state criminal history, and FBI fingerprint-based checks (selection contingent upon satisfactory results).
• Speak, read, and write English fluently.
• Basic computer skills, including navigating online systems and email.

Schedule

Members serve full-time (35-40 hours per week) during a typical school schedule, usually within 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary slightly by site. Members have time off during school breaks and holidays. The service term runs from October 19th, 2026, to May 28th, 2027, ensuring completion of the 900-hour requirement. Members begin with a two-week hybrid (virtual and in-person) orientation before starting at their assigned school.

Training

• Two-week onboarding training at the start of the service term, including online orientation, Zoom meetings, interactive trainings, and self-directed learning modules.
• Training covers individualized student support strategies, mandated reporting, data entry, and more.
• Completion of Math Corps Institute training during orientation.
• One-on-one supervision twice per month by a CYC Math Corps Coach.
• Ongoing professional development trainings facilitated by CYC staff and community partners at least twice per month.
• Participation in professional development opportunities at the service site, varying by location.

Service Location

Members are placed at one elementary school for the duration of their service term. Placement is determined based on the needs of the member and the school, with consideration for location and transportation. Service sites are located throughout Colorado, and members will have opportunities to connect with other Math Corps members.
