Juvenile Probation Specialist

About the role

The Greene County Juvenile Court Juvenile Detention Center seeks a Juvenile Probation Specialist to provide care, protection, and rehabilitation to juvenile offenders. The position involves investigating, assessing, counseling, and supervising juvenile offenders through Probation Rules, individualized case plans, and evidence-based programming.

Responsibilities

• Completes probation intake paperwork and discusses Probation Rules with youth and families.
• Develops and monitors individualized case plans for juvenile offenders, including relevant goals and objectives.
• Supervises youth in the community and/or placement, conducting regular reviews of their case plans and documenting all pertinent case activity.
• Provides assessments, including OYAS, MAYSI, ACE / CTS, and the Success Plan, using techniques like Motivational Interviewing, Carey Guides, and life skills.
• Attends detention, arraignment, pretrial, plea, and disposition hearings, and fulfills a rotation of Probation Specialist of the Day duties.
• Engages with youth through interviews and gathers information from various sources to prepare recommendations for hearings and case plans.
• Maintains open dialogue with community partners and treatment providers, attends departmental meetings, and participates in wrap-around meetings.
• Collects and tests urinalysis drug screens, collects DNA for felony youth, and oversees electronic monitoring and equipment.
• Plans and engages in youth community service activities, requests warrants, makes arrests, transports youth to detention, and supervises out-of-state Interstate Compact cases.
• Provides transportation to youth and families for medical, mental health appointments, and makes referrals to court and community-based programs.
• Keeps informed of new and proposed legislation and programs impacting juvenile justice, and participates in workshops and seminars.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Judge, Court Administrator, and/or Director of Probation.

Qualifications

• Preferred: B.A. or B.S. in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Sociology, Corrections, Counseling or related fields.
• Two (2) years full-time paid work experience not including practicum experience.
• Satisfactory completion of professional reference checks, BCI and FBI background checks, and affirmative duty to report misconduct.
• Knowledge of the juvenile justice system, childhood development, family dynamics, and JDAI principles.
• Applicable laws, codes, regulations, including the Interstate Compact for Juveniles.
• Computer software proficiency, including Microsoft Office products.
• Workplace policies and confidentiality.

Benefits

The Greene County Juvenile Court offers a range of benefits to full-time permanent and some part-time permanent employees, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, wellness program, employee assistance program, and deferred compensation plans. The County pays 80% of the health care premium and 39% of the dental premium. All full-time employees are eligible for $50,000 group life insurance paid 100% by the County. Non-permanent, seasonal, intermittent, part-time scheduled for less than 60 hours per pay period, and external interim employees are not benefit eligible.
