About the Role

This position supervises, develops, and manages two key programs within the District Attorney's Office:

  • Juvenile Diversion Program: Provides community-based alternatives to youth entering the juvenile justice system, aiming to counsel youth and parents, reduce juvenile recidivism, and facilitate behavioral or attitudinal change while avoiding formal court prosecution.
  • Lighthouse Program (Prevention Program): Offers community-based alternatives to children, youth, and families at risk of entering the juvenile justice, criminal justice, child welfare, or truancy systems. The goal is to engage, counsel, and support families to facilitate sustainable life changes.

Responsibilities

Juvenile Diversion

  • Review juvenile cases submitted by law enforcement or school districts to determine eligibility for diversion from formal court prosecution.
  • Meet with juvenile offenders and their legal guardians to assess accountability, amenability to supervision, and appropriateness for diversion.
  • Conduct screenings and data collection to identify risks and needs of juveniles, address family issues, and monitor appropriate services.
  • Engage in meaningful consultation with victims to ensure compliance with the Victim Rights Amendment for diversion referrals.
  • Act as a liaison between juveniles and victims, handling notifications, restitution collection, and monitoring contact between parties.
  • Coordinate interns in the diversion program.
  • Participate in Juvenile Justice-related trainings.
  • Research, complete, and file responses to Petition to Expungement after consultation with the JV Chief DDA and Director of Diversion.
  • Consult with victims regarding expungement of records to ensure compliance with the Victim Rights Amendment.

Prevention Program (Lighthouse)

  • Review cases submitted by school districts and community referrals to determine engagement processes.
  • Meet with children, youth, and parents/guardians to establish rapport, complete screenings/assessments, review family goals, and create service agreements.
  • Identify risks and needs of youth through screening and data collection, address family system issues, and monitor appropriate services.
  • Participate in youth and family-related trainings.

General Job Functions (Juvenile Diversion and Prevention Program)

  • Create case plans with juveniles and guardians, specifying contract length and conditions.
  • Supervise juveniles in the program to ensure compliance with contracts.
  • Monitor contracts, communicate with juveniles/parents, and determine successful closure or referral back to court.
  • Authorize release of evidence, close cases, and complete all documentation.
  • Partner with local agencies to monitor progress, including arranging useful public service, counseling, substance abuse treatment, and verifying school attendance.
  • Locate and apply for funding for prosocial activities, incentives, and therapeutic services.
  • Ensure timely assignment of diversion referrals, consistent documentation, and proper use of software.
  • Complete paperwork for grant compliance, including statistics, goals, and performance metrics.
  • Represent the District Attorney's Office on community boards or committees as directed.
  • Perform community outreach and education on youth-related issues.
  • Provide instruction and oversight to administrative assistants and communicate program needs to the Director.
  • Maintain clear, efficient, and effective oral and written communications.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and composure in adversarial situations, including interactions with opposing counsel, upset individuals, and exposure to sensitive or disturbing case materials (e.g., assaults, abuse, explicit content).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social science, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of related experience.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment

  • Requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Work is generally confined to a standard office environment.
