Juvenile Detention Officer Lead - Juvenile Court (0626)

About the role

The incumbent will supervise and administer the juvenile detention staff, assist in the implementation of court and detention division initiatives, and coordinate and lead staff.

Responsibilities

  • Builds positive working relationships with detention leadership and staff to create a positive structure and safe environment for detained youth.
  • Aids in the successful implementation of court and detention division initiatives, programs, and activities.
  • Hires and selects new staff, provides training, and develops staff through new employee training and staff development.
  • Maintains operational and safety standards by monitoring work activities of subordinate officers and ensuring staff compliance with laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Identifies individual youth’s needs, challenges, and strengths to provide individualized services promoting positive outcomes from their detention experience.
  • Ensures staff compliance and fidelity to Federal, State, County, and related laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for the detention center.
  • Determines rule infractions, takes appropriate action, and reports violations and/or incidents.
  • Monitors safety and security of the juvenile detention facility, including conducting facility inspections, security and safety checks, and handling emergency or crisis situations.
  • Trains and oversees the operation of detention center equipment, including control room equipment, fire systems, and duty equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR Associate's degree in a related field and three years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR Four years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Must submit to background check prior to hire.
  • Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for hire within the Juvenile Detention facility.
  • Forty hours of orientation training are required within first month on the job.
  • Sixteen additional hours of COJET certified training are required each year.
  • Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.

Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of: Basic principles and methods of treatment for juvenile delinquency; Child and adolescent development theories and application; Effects of substance abuse and addiction; Dynamics of behavioral and emotional problems in children; Crisis intervention and basic first aid techniques including CPR; Detention policies and procedures and applicable state laws, rules and regulations; Principles, methods and techniques of group and individual counseling; Working Knowledge Of Practices and procedures of a juvenile detention facility; Juvenile court proceedings; Human behavior and various social, economic and cultural backgrounds; Recordkeeping, documentation and report writing; Adolescent group activity planning and leadership.
  • Ability To Plan and schedule the work of others; Make appropriate decisions regarding methods of intervention and treatment; Deal impartially with individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds; Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; Follow written and verbal instructions; Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Coconino County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

  • Knowledge of Juvenile On-Line Tracking System (JOLTS).
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
