Juvenile Detention Officer Lead - Juvenile Court (0626)

About the role

This position involves supervision and administration of the juvenile detention staff, assisting in the implementation of court and detention division initiatives, and coordinating and leading staff.

Responsibilities

• Builds positive working relationships with detention leadership and staff to create a safe, healthy, learning environment for detained youth.
• Aids in the successful implementation of court and detention division initiatives, programs, and activities.
• Hires and selects new staff, provides new employee training, and assists in staff development.
• Maintains and evaluates the work performance of subordinate officers.
• Identifies individual youth’s needs, challenges, and strengths to provide individualized services promoting positive outcomes from their detention experience.
• Maintains safety and security of the juvenile detention facility, including conducting facility inspections and security checks.
• Manages emergency or crisis situations, including reviewing and debriefing after incidents.
• Trains and escorts juveniles throughout the facility, ensuring safety and security.
• Observes and reports on behaviors and situations, preparing detailed written reports.
• Responds to physical confrontations and emergency situations, applying mechanical restraints as necessary.
• May testify in court and drive a court vehicle to transport juveniles.
• Utilizes JOLTS to oversee equipment operation and maintenance.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR Associate's degree in a related field and three years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR Four years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
• Must submit to background check prior to hire.
• Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for hire within the Juvenile Detention facility.
• Forty hours of orientation training are required within first month on the job. Sixteen additional hours of COJET certified training are required each year.
• Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.

Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of: Basic principles and methods of treatment for juvenile delinquency, child and adolescent development theories and application, effects of substance abuse and addiction, dynamics of behavioral and emotional problems in children, crisis intervention and basic first aid techniques including CPR, detention policies and procedures and applicable state laws, rules and regulations, principles, methods and techniques of group and individual counseling, working knowledge of practices and procedures of a juvenile detention facility, juvenile court proceedings, human behavior and various social, economic and cultural backgrounds, recordkeeping, documentation and report writing, adolescent group activity planning and leadership.
• Working knowledge of: Practices and procedures of a juvenile detention facility, juvenile court proceedings, human behavior and various social, economic and cultural backgrounds, recordkeeping, documentation and report writing, adolescent group activity planning and leadership.
• Ability to: Plan and schedule the work of others, make appropriate decisions regarding methods of intervention and treatment, deal impartially with individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, work safely and support the culture of workplace safety, establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, communicate effectively with customers in person and over the phone, lift or restrain a detainee, lift, push or pull materials or equipment of 50 lbs. or less.
