Junior Software Developer — Remote

ListLab · Laguna Beach, CA · 3 wk ago
RemoteRemoteEngineering$95k/yrPart-time

Flexible title, time, and commitment: tailor the role to fit your skills, availability (full-time, part-time, side-gig, or fractional contract), and duration (short-term, long-term, or intermittent). No degree required—bootcamp grads, self-taught developers, and career changers are welcome.

About Us

We're a credible, funded, remote-first startup backed by a growing team. We're pre-launch and moving fast, with a goal to ship by the end of Q3 2026.

About The Role

Join a small, fast-moving engineering team building a consumer-facing web application. You’ll work alongside senior engineers in a structured, documented codebase—no solo development or guesswork. This is an opportunity to learn in a production environment, contribute to features used by real users, and grow through code reviews and direct mentorship.

Compensation

Up to $95,000 max total annual compensation in Tier 1 cities, with cash and equity components negotiable. Fractional or hourly arrangements are also available based on your commitment level.

What You'll Do

In Your First 7 Days

  • Set up your local development environment and submit your first PR
  • Review the codebase structure to understand where things live
  • Attend your first engineering standup and learn how the team communicates
  • Pick up a starter ticket and ship (or nearly ship) a small feature or fix
  • Establish your role and collaboration style with the team

Ongoing

  • Build features: pick up tickets, implement them, get reviews, and ship
  • Fix bugs: investigate issues, trace them through the stack, and resolve them
  • Write tests: maintain and extend test coverage as you go
  • Participate in code reviews: review others' code and learn from feedback on yours
  • Improve as an engineer: ask questions, pair when stuck, and level up through production work

Must-haves

  • Solid fundamentals in a modern frontend framework (React, Vue, Angular) and a backend language (Python, Ruby, Node—we’ll teach you what you’re missing)
  • Ability to read and navigate an existing codebase without line-by-line explanations
  • Understanding of version control (Git), REST APIs, and relational databases
  • Self-directed learner: you Google first, but ask for help before getting stuck for hours
  • Strong async communicator: write clear PR descriptions and flag blockers early

Nice-to-have

  • Previous contributions to open source or side projects you can showcase
  • Bootcamp, CS degree, or self-taught background—we care about skills, not credentials
  • Comfortable in fast-moving, ambiguous environments

What You're NOT

  • A solo developer: you’ll have senior engineers to learn from and a structured codebase
  • A DevOps/infra hire: we handle that; you focus on product features
  • Expected to be an expert: we’re hiring for trajectory, not years of experience
