Junior Plastics Engineer
Job Summary
DEKA Research & Development is seeking a Junior Plastics Engineer with manufacturing exposure to join their dynamic team. The ideal candidate will contribute to the development of plastic components, with a focus on medical products, working alongside a skilled team to create innovative solutions.
About the Role
This position will provide direction and input to the development team as a plastics expert, focusing on process development, transfer to high volume manufacturing, manufacturing feasibility, and design for manufacturing principles. The role also involves material selection, prototype development, and leading external suppliers in areas such as plastic injection molding, tooling, assembly equipment, and materials.
Responsibilities
- Provide direction and input to the development team as a plastics expert
- Develop plastics assembly processes
- Transfer to high volume manufacturing
- Conduct manufacturing feasibility studies
- Implement design for manufacturing principles
- Lead prototype development
- Source and lead external suppliers in areas including plastic injection molding, tooling, assembly equipment, and materials
- Work with internal and external manufacturing teams to develop robust manufacturing stations
Requirements
- Education: Degree in Plastics, Manufacturing, or Manufacturing Engineering
- Experience: Practical experience with plastic molding, including scientific injection molding, mold design, micro-molding, compression/transfer molding, LIM, blow molding, and thermoforming techniques
- Skills: Understanding of various plastic materials and rubbers, including medical grade materials; practical experience with component assembly, including prototype to high volume manufacturing, design of experiments, assembly fixture design, and documentation for assembly (IQ/OQ/PQs, PFMEAs); familiarity with medical device manufacturing requirements and testing for medical products
- Other: Demonstrated problem-solving skills; self-motivated and passionate; excellent verbal and written communication skills; highly motivated, focused on results and detail-oriented; ability to work in an open group environment; some travel may be required
- Technical knowledge: Understanding of plastics, manufacturing, and medical device requirements
- Industry experience: Practical experience in plastic molding and assembly
- Soft skills: Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and attention to detail
