About the role

The Junior Estimator assists in reviewing technical documents, calculating earthwork quantities, determining material and subcontract requirements, and supporting estimators on potential site development projects.

Responsibilities

  • Read and evaluate project drawings and specifications to compile detailed quantity take-offs for all bid items.
  • Convert project drawings or civil engineer CAD files to 3D CAD models for earthwork calculations.
  • Calculate earthwork quantities (mass excavation, over-excavation, cut/fill), structural excavation, structural backfill, and related materials.
  • Update project takeoffs per engineer-issued addendums and clarifications.
  • Perform area take-offs (slopes, flats, etc.).
  • Plot and color detailed maps to distinguish between different pay quantities.
  • Develop volume reports and cut/fill maps for multiple project phases using earthwork software.
  • Maintain take-off spreadsheets for material descriptions, quantities, backups, and project summaries.
  • Log all bid plans, specifications, and revisions.
  • Upload, manage, and distribute bid documents via company file transfer protocol (FTP).
  • Prepare and manage RFQs for vendors and subcontractors.
  • Review construction notes to quantify scope of work and specifications.
  • Perform additional assignments as requested by the Director of Preconstruction.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Associate’s degree in CAD or equivalent work experience in a construction environment (preferred).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and process contracts, subcontracts, statistical reports, and procedure manuals.
  • Proficiency in reading and understanding project drawings, blueprints, specifications, and RFQs.
  • Ability to produce routine reports and correspondence.
  • Competency in basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret bar graphs.
  • Apply common-sense understanding to written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions.
  • Ability to plot and scan drawings using company printers or plotters.
  • Handle problems involving multiple concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of AGTEK earthwork software.
  • Understanding of geotechnical and soil reports.
  • Skill in managing multiple projects with precision and speed.
  • Basic understanding of pricing terms.
  • Ability to maintain focus in pressured or time-sensitive situations.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Willingness to work overtime if required.
