Junior Counselor
Seasonal, exempt position at Camp Collins under the supervision of the Executive Director.
About the role
The Junior Camp Counselor supports Unit Counselors and Unit Directors in ensuring the safety, well-being, and positive experience of a designated group of campers within their assigned cabin. This role involves constant supervision, fostering a supportive environment, participating in activities, resolving conflicts, maintaining cabin cleanliness, and serving as a role model to facilitate campers’ growth and enjoyment throughout their camp stay.

Responsibilities
- Provide continuous supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of campers within the assigned cabin during activities and resting hours.
- Create and maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive atmosphere within the cabin, fostering positive relationships among campers.
- Actively participate in planned camp activities, encourage camper participation, and facilitate cabin-specific programs or team-building exercises.
- Address conflicts or behavioral issues among campers using effective conflict resolution strategies to promote a harmonious environment.
- Communicate effectively with fellow junior cabin counselors, cabin counselors, Unit Directors, and camp staff to address camper needs and share concerns.
- Serve as a positive role model for campers by demonstrating exemplary behavior, values, and attitudes, and provide mentorship to support campers' personal development.
- Respond to emergencies by applying first aid and emergency protocols to ensure camper safety in case of accidents or unforeseen situations.
- Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and general upkeep of the cabin, ensuring compliance with camp rules and standards.
- Document and report incidents, camper behaviors, and noteworthy occurrences to camp leadership as required.
- Follow YMCA Child Protection Policies, maintain professional boundaries, complete required training, and report suspected abuse, safety concerns, or policy violations immediately.
Requirements
- Must pass a YMCA background check.
- Must possess (or obtain during training) a current CPR/AED & First Aid Certification.
- Must be 16 years old or older.
- Preferred: Graduate of Counselor in Training Program, experience working with youth, or certification in Challenge Course Facilitation, Archery, or Lifeguarding.

Physical Requirements
- Stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.

- Read and interpret written information.
- Perform repetitive motions as required by the position.
Working Conditions
- Indoor and outdoor work environments with exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Moderate to high noise levels.
- Evening, weekend, and holiday work as needed.

Pay
$500 per week plus room and board.
