About the Role

The Judiciary Clerk (Cashier) performs all functions and duties necessary in the Judicial Office, including accepting cases and pleadings in person, by mail, or through File & Serve; processing pleadings received by the court; and tasking work to the appropriate person or queue for Carroll County District Court.

Responsibilities

• Processes and validates payments received by the court; prepares daily deposit and distributes related paperwork to the accounting office.
• Assists customers, attorneys, and court-related agencies regarding questions/procedures in person and by telephone, adhering to office guidelines and policies.
• Validates payments and filings received by the court; ensures filings meet requirements of rules and associated fees.
• Processes legal documents such as new cases, renewals, dismissals, etc.; tasks filings to appropriate desk/queue.
• Validates and assists with processing landlord-tenant filings.
• Greets and assists the public and court-related personnel.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal, or financial services.
• A Bachelor’s Degree, Paralegal/Associate’s Degree, 60 college credits, or a Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge

• General office practice, procedures, and equipment.
• Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
• Basic English and arithmetic (spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

Skills

• Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.
• Typing on a personal computer with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Using standard office and business equipment (personal computers, word processing, database software, copier, microfilm machine, cash register, scanner, fax machine, etc.).
• Using and maintaining alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
• Communicating clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
• Understanding and abiding by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Exercising tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
• Following procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
• Using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Exercising independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.

Physical Requirements

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
