Judicial Clerk II

Full-time, non-exempt position with a salary range of $47,999.16 - $69,599.16.

About the Role

The Judicial Department works to provide equal access to justice, contribute to public safety, and strengthen the rule of law across Colorado. This role performs skilled administrative, customer service, and technical support work related to court operations, including docket management, courtroom duties, case processing, and managing the full life cycle of multiple case types within the Clerk of Court’s office. The position is part of a progressive job series (Judicial Clerk I or II), with placement determined by qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities

• Provides case management, customer service, and judicial officer support for clients, officers, and other judicial staff in-person, via phone, email, and courtroom settings, including filing, scanning, and uploading documents.
• Instructs customers on case types and procedures; shares information with law enforcement, attorneys, correctional officials, and other agencies.
• Responds to inquiries over the counter, phone, email, and voicemail; acts as a liaison between the division/Judicial Officer and customers, de-escalates conflicts, and explains court processes without providing legal advice.
• Creates, processes, and manages electronic and paper-filed case documentation, including entering and tracking case status, processing exhibits, plea agreements, sentencing, restitution, court-ordered fees, notices, court orders, bonds, warrants, and protection orders.
• Assists with record retention and maintains the case management system, including updating case status, preparing cases for assignment, reviewing and issuing court orders, and managing case status reports.
• Processes payments, reconciles cash drawers, and prepares daily deposits.
• Provides direct support to judicial officers, including drafting and revising court orders, maintaining calendars, preparing mileage reimbursements, and composing correspondence.
• Processes opinion issuance, including reviews and submissions from chambers, maintaining weekly opinion announcements, editing opinion captions, transmitting opinions to legal research vendors, and updating the case management system.
• Performs courtroom management, including preparing daily dockets, ensuring courtroom cleanliness, checking in parties, and managing case flow.
• Assists with courtroom audio/visual, recording, and virtual conferencing systems to ensure accurate recordings of hearings.
• Schedules interpreters as needed.
• Participates in cross-training to assist across courtrooms and dockets, facilitating coverage in different areas/divisions.
• Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• At least one (1) year of experience as a Judicial Clerk I or Court Judicial Assistant for the Colorado Judicial Department, or at least one (1) year of relevant work experience in a similar role.

Skills

Work requires comprehensive, practical knowledge of court processes. The role involves completing a broad range of tasks, sometimes complex, with minimal supervision. Responsibilities may include handling and balancing cash, billing, and collections.

Work Environment

• Primarily sedentary work involving sitting, with occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds.
• Office or indoor courtroom environment with minimal exposure to unpleasant conditions or hazards.
• Interactions may include hostile or irate individuals, as well as those with known violent backgrounds.
