About the Role
The Judicial Department works to provide equal access to justice, contribute to public safety, and strengthen the rule of law across Colorado. This position performs skilled administrative, customer service, and technical support work related to court operations, including docket management, courtroom duties, case processing, and managing the full life cycle of multiple case types within the Clerk of Court’s office. The role is part of a progressive job series (Judicial Clerk I or Judicial Clerk II), with placement determined by qualifications and relevant experience.
Responsibilities
- Provides case management, customer service, and judicial officer support for clients, officers, and other judicial staff over the counter, in the courtroom, and via phone and email, including filing, scanning, and uploading documents.
- Instructs customers on case types and procedures; shares applicable information with law enforcement, attorneys, correctional officials, and other outside agencies.
- Responds to customer inquiries over the counter, via phone, email, and voicemail; acts as a liaison between the division/Judicial Officer and customers, de-escalates stressful situations, and explains court processes without providing legal advice.
- Creates, processes, and manages electronic and paper-filed case documentation, including entering and tracking case status, processing exhibits, plea agreements, sentencing, restitution, court-ordered fees, notices, court orders, bonds, warrants, and protection orders.
- Assists with record retention and maintains the case management system, including reviewing and updating case status, preparing cases for assignment, and managing case status reports.
- Processes payments, reconciles cash drawers, and prepares daily deposits.
- Provides direct support to judicial officers, including drafting and revising court orders, maintaining calendars, preparing mileage reimbursement, and composing correspondence.
- Processes opinion issuance, including reviews and submissions from chambers, maintains weekly opinion announcements, and updates the case management system with opinion-related deadlines.
- Performs courtroom management, including preparing daily dockets, ensuring courtroom cleanliness, checking in parties, and managing case flow.
- Assists with courtroom audio/visual, recording, and virtual conferencing systems to ensure accurate recordings of hearings.
- Schedules interpreters as needed and participates in cross-training to assist across the district.
- Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, or temporary employees; provides advice on specific problems or policies to others outside direct reporting relationships.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- At least 1 year of experience as a Judicial Clerk I or Court Judicial Assistant for the Colorado Judicial Department OR at least 1 year of relevant work experience in a similar role.
Skills
- Comprehensive, practical knowledge of court work processes, with the ability to complete a broad range of tasks, sometimes complex, without frequent reference to others.
- Moderate impact on organizational operations; standard fiscal responsibility, including handling and balancing cash.
- Works under general supervision with some discretion in decision-making; assignments are reviewed upon completion.
