Judicial Assistant (Paralegal)
About the role
The Department of Consumer and Business Services (DCBS) is a progressive business regulatory state agency dedicated to the mission of protecting and serving Oregon's consumers and workers while supporting a positive business climate. The position is with the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB), which provides timely and impartial resolution of disputes arising under the Workers' Compensation Law and Oregon Safe Employment Act.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate and interpret legal documents and stakeholder communications in support of 2-4 Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) to determine and implement appropriate processing decisions based on applicable statutes, rules, and agency policies and procedures.
- Serve as liaison between the parties and the ALJs and Workers’ Compensation Hearings Division to interpret and resolve problems through negotiation.
- Be responsible for complete working knowledge of applicable statutes, rules and policies as they apply to various situations that arise from processing legal documents, telephone requests and contacts with outside stakeholders.
Requirements
- Two years associate degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant Studies OR Eighteen months of paralegal experience OR Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates experience in legal work, independent judgment, legal terminology principles, concepts, systems, and processes.
- Note: Experience must include discovery and trial methods and procedures, legal ethics and skill in preparing legal documents, interviewing witnesses and explaining legal issues.
Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
- Experience with legal and medical terminology.
- Excellent grammar, punctuation, proofreading, and written communication skills.
- Able to manage multiple competing priorities while maintaining accuracy.
- Able to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to accept guidance, embrace change, and contribute positively to a dynamic work environment.
- Outstanding attendance and reliability.

This position is eligible to telework two days per week once the incumbent has gained the proficiency to perform work independently. Pay
The salary range listed is the non-PERS eligible rate. If you are already a participating PERS member or once you become PERS eligible after 6 months of employment, the salary range will increase by 6.95% and the required 6% employee retirement contribution will be deducted from your pay.
