About the role
The Journeyman Stationary Engineer is responsible for maintaining, repairing, installing, and operating heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and related systems. They also manage electrical and power systems, assist with project planning, perform quality control inspections, and conduct routine building inspections.
Responsibilities
- Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics on various types of HVAC and electrical equipment
- Maintain, disassemble, repair, overhaul, assemble, install, and clean pumps, motors, controls, valves, burners, compressors, filters, dampers, pipes, belts, ductwork, boilers, and hot water heaters
- Operate installed HVAC, electrical, and electronic equipment and systems
- Perform assigned recurring work as part of the Preventive Maintenance Program
- Assist the Chief Engineer in developing repair and replacement projects
- Perform facility assessments and generate thorough reports for the Chief Engineer or Project Manager
- Work beyond normal duty hours or holidays and weekends as needed
- Perform as a Quality Control Inspector for work being performed by others
Requirements
- Five years' experience working with HVAC and electrical equipment and systems
- Working knowledge of power production and plumbing systems
- In-depth knowledge of chillers, pumps, motors, and fans operation
- Able to interpret basic mechanical and electrical blueprints to facilitate troubleshooting
- Familiarity with basic carpentry work to include doors and hardware repair and adjustments
- Adept in working with hand and power tools
- Working knowledge and basic computer skills - able to use Microsoft Office Products
- Able to perform basic Quality Control procedures
Qualifications
- Satisfactory completion of a 4-year Stationary Engineer's Apprenticeship Program with a local union or equivalent
- Completion of Electrical, Mechanical & Technology courses administered at a local City College or technical institution (plus)
- EPA Universal Certification to work with refrigerants is required (within six months of employment)
- NATE certification is a plus
Skills
- Ability to read, understand, speak, and write English fluently
- Strong computer skills to facilitate labor reporting, job completion, and assistance in planning new projects
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
- Able to work capably with hand and power tools
- Knowledge of Quality Control methods and processes
