About the role

AC Transit is seeking experienced Journey Level Mechanics with 4-7 years of automotive experience. Candidates do not need diesel mechanic experience, as the District will train automotive mechanics on diesel and large vehicles. Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, inspect, and repair or replace defective coach components, sub-components, and systems on District vehicles, including engines, transmissions, differential units, generators, starters, pumps, air suspension systems, pneumatic systems, passenger lift assemblies, radiators, injectors, clutches, and air conditioning systems.
  • Determine proper course of action for vehicle repair, maintenance, adjustment, and component replacement.
  • Maintain, adjust, and repair all bus systems, components, and parts, including hydraulic and electrical systems, brakes, front ends, and air conditioning systems.
  • Perform major overhauls, tune-ups, and repairs to brakes and steering systems.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and repair of passenger lifts on coaches.
  • Change windows and seats, and perform minor body repair.
  • Operate buses to diagnose component failure, make roadside repairs, or move disabled buses.
  • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, hydraulic lifts, hoists, jacks, brake lathes, and tugs for pulling disabled buses.
  • Document all work performed, including repair records on driver's defect cards, daily lift status reports, repair logs, and weekly reports to supervisors.
  • Communicate and consult with District staff from Transportation, Maintenance, and Materials departments.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the District's Apprentice Training Program, or four (4) years of recent and verifiable experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic.
  • An additional three (3) years of experience as a Mechanic may substitute for the post-12th grade educational requirement.
  • Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade, plus either:
    • Successful completion of all eight (8) levels of the District's state-certified four (4) year Apprentice Training program, or
    • Verified completion of an external two (2) year training program in automotive or heavy-duty truck maintenance and repair from an accredited trade or vocational school.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must have a clean driving record and obtain/maintain a valid California Class A or B commercial Driver License with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsements, and a Medical Certificate.
  • Must acquire or possess the tools necessary to perform the duties of the position, including pneumatic, measuring, and hand tools, and a rollaway toolbox (an allowance is provided by the District if hired).
  • Must be available to work five (5) consecutive days, including weekends and holidays, on any of three shifts (day, evening, or late).

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, and moving between stations in a large maintenance facility.
  • Ability to safely access service bays, sit while reviewing or preparing work orders, and perform tasks requiring bending, squatting, stooping, turning, climbing, kneeling, and twisting.
  • Perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine hand/finger manipulations.
  • Safely lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to seventy (70) lbs., or use appropriate lifting equipment for heavier items.
