POSITION SUMMARY

The Journey Level Mechanic provides maintenance repairs and rebuilding functions on District fleet vehicles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Rebuilds and repairs components and auxiliary systems on vehicles or makes component exchanges.
  • Performs minor body repairs and painting on vehicles.
  • Diagnostics and repair on power train components, brake systems, chassis components and body, lighting, heating, and electrical systems.
  • Interprets parts lists, assembly drawings, technical orders and maintenance procedures concerning gasoline and diesel-powered buses and other equipment.
  • Completes work orders with proper cost and time data.

Other Responsibilities

  • Serves as a member of the Transportation Team of the District; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
  • Performs bus driver assignments on an occasional basis, as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduation or equivalent
  • Five (5) years of experience or technical training in functions such as inspection, repair, or maintenance of medium and heavy-duty equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of basic, general purpose, vehicle repair course

Condition Of Employment

  • Criminal background clearance
  • Valid Washington State Drivers Licenses and CDL with appropriate school bus endorsements
  • FMCSA drug and alcohol testing program

Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending/stooping, twisting, squatting/kneeling.
  • Frequent talking/hearing, sitting, climbing 3-4 stairs into a bus and up to a 6 ft ladder, and using foot controls for operating various vehicles including 84 passenger size buses.
  • Frequent vision use in the position.
  • Frequent use of a computer screen and keyboard.
  • Constantly lift/carry up to 10 lbs; frequently 11-20 lbs; and occasionally 21-50 lbs.
  • Seldom lift/carry 50-100 lbs and should be done as a two-person lift.

Work Environment

  • Indoors and outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Frequent interruptions.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Exposure to high noise levels in the work environment.
  • Exposure to angry, frustrated, or aggressive individuals.

Work Schedule

  • This position typically works, 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, 260 days per year.

Reporting Relationship

  • Position reports to and evaluated by Executive Director of Transportation or designee.
  • May also be required to take instructions from Lead Mechanic.
