Writing$82k/yrFull-time

About the role

The Graphics Intensive is a unique opportunity for mission-driven students and early career professionals with visual skills to work alongside journalists for a 12-week, full-time program. We seek individuals who bring their own inquisitive nature to develop creative approaches to storytelling, including those who may not have previously considered working in an independent newsroom. Prior journalism experience isn't required — many of our team members have embraced journalism's core fundamentals while at The Times — but you must have a desire to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Responsibilities

  • Under close guidance and supervision of a senior editor, produce visual and data-based multimedia journalism in response to breaking or as ongoing news coverage
  • Design and build graphics and other visual forms using web-based markup and coding languages with guidance from senior editors
  • Participate in training sessions
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom
  • Complete work assignments based on team needs and news demands
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Qualifications

  • 1+ year of demonstrated strong performance toward an undergraduate degree, or relevant professional experience
  • 2+ years of experience working with graphics tools and software, like D3.js, R, JavaScript, Python, HTML/CSS, GIS, and 3-D modeling software
  • Interest in data visualization, cartography or other forms of visual journalism and the skills to start producing work in these areas
  • Skill in interface design and information graphic design
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Illustrator, or with design tools like Figma
  • A portfolio demonstrating experience with news graphics or interactive visualizations

Preferred Qualifications

  • News or visual internships or equivalent experience
  • Curiosity and interest in the news, and in finding innovative approaches to telling stories
  • Experience working independently, meet deadlines, and being attentive to detail in an unpredictable news cycle and a high-pressure newsroom environment
  • Experience working collaboratively with members of a team with diverse creative skills
  • Available to work some nights, weekends and holidays as the news cycle demands
  • Interest in professional growth and openness to professional feedback

Applications

Applications should include links to a portfolio or work samples to demonstrate your skills and experience. Please attach a cover letter describing your role in specific projects and which periods of time you will be available for the Graphics intensive. Your cover letter should include any periods when you will be able to work full time in New York, such as, “Available: Winter (2026-27), Spring, Summer or Fall” — or any combination of these.

Additional Compensation and Benefits

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

Pay and Schedule

The annual base pay range for this role is between: $82,414.80 - $82,414.80 USD

Benefits

For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.
